Hidden Gems of NSW: Exploring Racecourse Beach, Bellingen, and Diggers Camp

Our destination? The lovely Crescent Head, just a four-hour cruise down the freeway. But why stop there when adventure calls? We pushed on to Racecourse Beach, our home away from home for the next few nights.

Now, I'd love to tell you we were greeted by sunshine and blue skies, but Mother Nature had other plans. We arrived to set up camp in the rain - talk about baptism by water!

Setup in wet

Despite the damp start, we settled in for four glorious nights by the beach. There's something magical about falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up with sand between your toes.

Rain gone the promise of good weather ahead

This little jaunt was exactly what we needed - a perfect buffer between the holiday madness and the return to reality. Sometimes, you just need to hit pause, breathe in that salty air, and reset.

A walk around crescent head before heading to Bellingen

Our coastal adventure continued as we packed up camp and set our sights on the charming town of Bellingen. Known to locals as "Bello," this place is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of NSW.

We rolled into the Bellingen Showground, our home base for the next couple of nights. Let me tell you, these showgrounds are a camper's dream - affordable, spacious, and right in the thick of things. Perfect for our plans to explore the area!

Bello Showgrounds

Speaking of exploring, we couldn't resist the call of the mountains. We took a day trip up the range to Dorrigo, and wow, what a drive! The winding roads, lush rainforests, and breathtaking views had us stopping every few minutes for photos. If you're in the area, this is a must-do!

Bellingen itself? A delightful mix of bohemian vibes and country charm. We spent our evenings strolling the quaint streets, popping into quirky shops, and sampling the local fare. Two nights flew by in a blink!

A wet day saw us drive up the range to Dorigo and Dangar Falls.

Back in Dorigo for afternoon tea.

After 2 nights at Dorigo (rather damp) our leaving day dawned fine. Off to Diggers Camp.

Boorkoom was looking good. Night one was on a camp site next to our preferred site A full moon and the tennis on our tablet from the comfort of our clifftop retreat.

Full moon: the view from our site for the night.

Next morning, after a surf, we moved the teardrop all of 7 metres to our preferred site for the next 3 nights.

A perfect summer camp, waves and sun.

An inferno that blocked the light and caused our evacuation.

the light changes, we packed up

a surreal pinkness

It was very disappointing to pack up and leave. We were told to go to an evacuation point in Wooli further south, but the road was still open to the north, so we headed straight home.

Our late January holiday was over

98 nights
