Six Months Into Retirement and Heading Away Again
It's been a while since I last posted on Tiny Camper. (Six months!)
For many years this blog followed our camping adventures while I balanced work, weekends away, and plans for retirement. Then retirement finally arrived. After all those years of planning, it has been surprisingly liberating to find myself on the other side of it.
Now, six months later, I thought it was time for an update.

One lesson stands out. There is no need to rush.
After years of spreadsheets, super projections and property decisions, I assumed the planning would stop. It hasn't. The difference is that now I'm planning things I want to do rather than things I have to do.
The reality is that life quickly fills the space available. There have been projects around the house and garden. Jobs that once had to be squeezed into weekends can now be done properly. The garden has never looked better. I've had more time with family and friends. Every Wednesday morning I ride with a local cycling group, followed by coffee and conversation by the beach. I can head out for a surf and stay until I'm ready to come in rather than watching the clock and thinking about work.
It's been a very conscious choice to slow down after decades of working to school bells and timetables.
For years, life was scheduled. Retirement has given me permission to let days unfold at a gentler pace. Some days are productive. Some are not. Both seem perfectly acceptable. I've found myself focusing less on big goals and more on having a better quality day.
That doesn't mean the camping bug has disappeared.
This long weekend we're hitching up the teardrop camper and heading to Gibraltar Range National Park for a few days. Nothing elaborate. Just a simple escape to recharge, enjoy the outdoors, and remind ourselves why we bought the camper in the first place.
The camper is ready. The batteries are charged. The coffee gear is packed. The forecast looks promising.
I'm looking forward to leisurely mornings followed by a walk when it warms up (Gibraltar Range is cold this time of year.), some photography, good food, and starry moonless nights by the fire..
Over the coming months I plan to post more regularly again. There are new camping trips to share, gear updates, lessons learned from retirement, and plenty of ideas for making the most of simple, affordable travel.
Six months into retirement, it feels like the next chapter is only just beginning. The best part is that there is no hurry to find out where it leads.
For now, though, it's time to finish packing and head off for the long weekend.
I'll report back after Gibraltar Range with photos, walks, campsites and a few lessons from our first camping trip of winter.
See you down the road.
