A long drive of about 650 km was ahead of us. We left our camp in Canberra early on a warm Tuesday morning, and drove north to the Gungahlin Aquatic Centre to stretch out, relax and get the blood moving before a day of sitting in the car. We always try to get to a fitness centre every few days when travel through a town, this way we can avail ourselves of the showers and at the same time keep actively working on our fitness. The local pool is also a fantastic way to meet locals.

Marlow Riverside free camp |
Refreshed by our swim we drove out to Cann River, halfway along, hot winds gusting at 70 kmph and the smoke of fires appearing on the ridges beside us. We made it through the fire section and stopped for lunch in the park at Cann River. It was nice to have a park with shade and clean toilets. It was beginning to get hot, like 35 degrees hot!
After lunch at Can River we drove to Marlow. Marlo, often referred to as “Marlo on the Snowy River,” is a small coastal town in Victoria, Australia. It is situated at the point where the Snowy River meets the Southern Ocean. Marlo is known for its picturesque coastal and riverfront views, making it a popular destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts. The town is part of the East Gippsland region and is located near Croajingolong National Park, which is renowned for its natural beauty and diverse wildlife. Marlo offers various outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, boating, hiking, and birdwatching, making it a serene destination for those looking to connect with nature. We camped at a beautiful free camp on the river, and that evening the night the sky was alight with the orange glow of the fires. Upon arising early next morning (and after the morning coffee ritual,) we hiked along the banks of the Snowy until we came to the “MOTS” (Mouth of the Snowy. Just a trickle since the 1950’s when the river was dammed as part of the Hydro Electric Scheme.
After the walk we had breakfast from the teardrop galley and then drove to Paynesville for a free shower at the Marina. Paynesville is a charming coastal town located in Victoria, Australia. It is situated in the Gippsland region, on the Gippsland Lakes, which are a network of lakes and waterways known for their natural beauty and recreational activities. Paynesville is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and water sports enthusiasts. we enjoyed the shower and a great coffee at the Paintsville Arts Hub. We drove on to the town of Sale and lunched (again from the galley) at the Sale Botanic Gardens before stocking up with a few days worth of food and drink and heading to Loch Sport, our final destination.
