Swimming, Walking, and Meeting Giant Goannas: Our Unforgettable Hat Head Camping Adventure!

Trip #09

The adventure began with a solid meal plan. We packed our ingredients, ensuring everything was cooled to perfection, and got our fridge on mains to chill down. A block of ice was added to supplement the fridge temp until it melted and the battery took over. With the Victron smart charger hooked up to the LiFePo4 135AH battery, we were ready to hit the road with power to burn.

Our destination? Hat Head. We had a plethora of trails to explore and a camping trip ahead of us. Unfortunately, we had to work on the day of departure, but we aimed to leave at 15:00 for a four-hour drive south. A quick setup in the twilight would have to do, unless we could somehow escape work early.

We were enjoying a lazy day at the campground when we spotted a giant goanna sauntering through the area. It was a magnificent sight to behold as the impressive reptile made its way towards us in broad daylight. We couldn’t believe our luck at seeing such a majestic creature up close.

Despite the excitement, we managed to keep our composure and observe the goanna from a safe distance. It was a fascinating experience, watching as it went about its business, completely unbothered by our presence.

On Sunday night. The heat of the day had disappeared, and we sat in the peaceful twilight with a glass of organic red wine in hand. The campground was quiet, and we had enjoyed walking, swimming, and indulging in delicious fresh oysters, followed by hot showers at the end of the day. Coffee, food, and another swim were on the menu, Our fridge was cold, and our battery fully charged thanks to sunny days and a great solar collector.

Our battery held up, and our solar blanket had been fantastic. We parked in the shade and used the blanket to chase the sun, keeping our fridge cool for four days and providing us with plenty of power for lights and pump. We relied on a 10-liter water container with a tap for our daily water supply and used the pump during peak solar hours to fill it up each day.

Overall, this was the first time we returned home without a list of improvements for next time. We had enjoyed three wonderful and comfortable nights, bringing our total number of nights away to 28. It seems that each trip just gets better than the last. Take a peek at our gallery and see for yourself.
