Misty Ethereal Walk: the unmissable Moss Garden and Wards Canyon

Carnarvon Gorge, a hidden gem in Queensland, Australia, where ancient sandstone cliffs meet lush rainforests, creating a haven for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike. In this post, we’ll take you on an unforgettable journey as we embark on a morning walk in the mist, discovering the enchanting Moss Garden and venturing deeper into the past at Wards Canyon.

We began our day (as always) with coffee at first light, and then a surreal morning walk up the main gorge track, where the mystical mist weaves its magic, transforming Carnarvon Gorge into an ethereal wonderland. As the soft, filtered light illuminated our path, we were captivated by the grandeur of the towering sandstone cliffs that surrounded us.

The main gorge track lead us through diverse landscapes, with the muffled sound of our footsteps mingling with the rustling of moss-covered rocks beneath our feet. As we proceeded along the path, the moist air invigorated our senses, refreshing our soul with every breath.

At the Moss Garden, a hidden oasis awaited, tucked away amidst the ancient rocks. This natural masterpiece is adorned with a mesmerizing variety of mosses and ferns, thriving in the sheltered and moist environment. The vibrant greens created a picturesque setting, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Instead of turning back at this point, we continued our adventure to Wards Canyon, a place of profound geological significance and a window to the past. The path meanders through the lush vegetation, offering glimpses of unique rock formations and a different variety of plant life.

Wards canyon not to be missed

Wards Canyon is a living relic of ancient rainforests that once covered this region. As you traverse the canyon, you’ll be surrounded by towering sandstone walls and a lush, vibrant environment. This secluded paradise houses prehistoric plants, some dating back to the time of the dinosaurs.

Venturing deeper into the canyon, following the boardwalk that lead to small waterfalls and cascades, added to the magical atmosphere. A profound sense of human occupation for millennia. The echoes of ancient civilisation. The calming sound of flowing water and the verdant shades of green evoked a sense of tranquillity and connection to nature’s ancient past.

We returned to our teardrop after chatting with the friendly ranger at the information centre. The sun had made an appearance now and we spent the afternoon tidying up and drying out from the previous nights downpour, whilst watch the play of light on the gorge opposite our camp.
